You may have heard the reports that say that the use of drugs is on the decline. It is true that fewer middle and high school students are abusing drugs, even meth. Yet, this does not mean that all kids have stop using
or at least trying it once. According to the Meth Project one in four teens have admitted to using meth.
One reasons that crystal meth addiction is so tempting is that many times it is prepared in a candy-flavored variety. This makes it more tempting to the younger kids. It may even appear to be less dangerous since it has a candy taste and smell to it.
How can meth be used? It can be snorted, smoked or injected.
It is generally prepared with such chemicals as cold medication, iodine, and anhydrous ammonia (fertilizer). Once used, meth will release a burst of dopamine, which will cause a sense of extreme euphoria. This euphoria can last anywhere from 6 hours to 24 hours.
During this high, the brain’s pleasure centers can become damaged. This can cause the user to not feel good again except when he/she uses meth.
Research shows that meth can enter the blood stream as quickly as cocaine. Yet, its effects can last longer.
Chronic abuse can lead to such symptoms as: hallucinations, violent behavior and paranoia. The symptoms can linger long after a person quits using the drug as well. Memory problems, judgment impairment and motor impairment can be seen for more than a year after being clean from the drug.
The signs that one may be using meth are:
Incessant talking, decreased appetite, anxiety, dilated pupils and sweating. If used for a while a person can also experience, strong body odor, tooth decay, sores that resemble acne, moodiness, angry outbursts and withdrawal. Full blown addicts also may experience hair loss and intense hallucinations.
Crushed soda cans with small holes in the side, light bulbs with the bottoms and filaments removed, bottle caps or cigarette lighters may indicate that someone is smoking meth or injecting it.
